Here we have a pencil drawing of a particularly alluring pose by Aftyn Rose, referenced from a photo on her Snapchat. During my time with Kimodameshi, I found real joy in an intuitive digital version of the pencil sketching I would do as a child. Because all of those were made on a daily deadline, I was moving fast and ignoring details. I began to wonder: what would it look like if I really took care with each of the marks? You may recognize this as a cleaned up version of one of those daily sketches.
At one level, this is a movement away from my goal of developing a more simplified style. This drawing was a deep dive into chasing detail. At first, when I reflected on that, I was disappointed with myself. However, I have come around on it since.
I don’t expect I’ll go down this road often. Improving my simplification instincts really is the goal. But I will not apologize for or regret an occasional foray into hyper-realism.
