Molcajete

Still life painting in watercolor representing a dark stone mortar and pestle filled with oranges and bananas

This is the first of two still life paintings I am working on. This is a watercolor painting, made in Artstudio Pro, depicting the mortar and pestle in my kitchen that my mom has been loading up with fruit. It sits on a bay window ledge in my kitchen. It can get some cool lighting on it through that window, but things have been overcast lately, hence the blue tinge to everything in this scene.

It was inspired by seeing all the fabulous posts on Cara. Mostly I like seeing other people do portraits, but I keep responding emotionally to still life paintings. I can’t explain it, really. But there’s some kind of deep association in my brain between these soft-focused pictures and a sense of peace and contentment. It made me want to do my own.

And I’ll tell you what. I think this looks pretty good! I experimented with a bunch of the watercolor brushes in Artstudio Pro. Like the pencils, I am quite happy with the quality of their tools. I was intending to pick out details with colored pencils, but decided it wasn’t needed. I like the softness of the edges. It makes everything kind of glow, even if the tone of everything is kind of cold.

Note: my mortar and pestle is not a true molcejete. It’s not made of volcanic rock. Eh. I just like the word! Call it artistic license.
